This happened because of a special and complex historical moment. It was the end of la belle époque, when the accumulations of big significant discoveries in physics and mathematics generated the conscience and means of the space-time problem, thus of the attempt to create a unified explanation for these crucial aspects of the universe and the human conscience of the universe. At the same time, the development of the pragmatic liberal humanist discourse after the French-Prussian war led, despite the internal logic of competition and antagonisms inside modernity, to many illusions and confusions which could be surpassed only by strong personalities.
